My approach

Individual Therapy

As an individual therapist, I work from the framework of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (also known as “ACT”, read as one word), belonging to the so-called “third generation” of evidence-based psychological therapies.

Although belonging to the cognitive-behavioral tradition, contextual therapies have a different conceptual framework (further removed from the biomedical model) and incorporate influences from other traditions such as mindfulness, and principles and techniques from humanistic and existentialist psychology.

From an ACT perspective, we all have the potential to lead a life with purpose and meaning. But sometimes the things we do to avoid suffering, which is considered inevitable, can limit our life. We then focus on “solving our problems”, instead on doing the things that matter to us and make life worth living.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is conceived as a brief, active and transformative process, and its results are noticeable after about 8 or 10 sessions, although each case is different.

Couples Therapy

In couple’s therapy, I am trained Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT), developed by Sue Johnson.

EFCT is based on Attachment Theory and science and has numerous studies that support its effectiveness and the change processes involved. It is the only couples therapy approach that meets all the empirical validation criteria established by the American Psychological Association for couples and family therapy (Sexton T, Gordon KC, Gurman A, Lebow J, Holtzworth-Munroe A, Johnson S. Guidelines for classifying evidence-based treatments in couple and family therapy. Fam Process. 2011 Sep;50(3):377-92. DOI: 10.1111/j.1545-5300.2011.01363.x. PMID: 21884076). It is a relatively short process (between 8 and 20 sessions), with a low relapse rate.

Can I help you?

I am a General Health Psychologist (Psicóloga General Sanitaria). I specialize in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

ACT could be beneficial for you if you feel your life is limited by, or you are suffering because of, certain thoughts (e.g. negative, intrusive) or feelings (sadness, anxiety, fear…). In particular, I work with anxiety problems or excessive worries, difficulties managing frustration or anger, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder or depression.
